Police reviews security arrangements

Security forces in Maoist-hit districts have been advised to strictly follow the standard operating procedures during their movement. “We keep revising the SOP for security forces, depending on situations. Bhubaneswar: The Pulwama terror strike that killed at least 40 CRPF jawans on Thursday has prompted the Odisha police to take a relook at its security arrangements in Maoist-affected districts ahead of the general elections.Keeping in view frequent movement of politicians, security forces and polling personnel in the run-up to elections, police have asked the SPs to take adequate security measures.“We will draw fullproof security plans for areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). Clear guidelines have already been issued to ensure that the SOP during their movement in Maoist areas is duly followed,” Sharma told the media. We will also adopt area dominance tactics with the help of central armed police forces in the LWE-affected areas.

Coordination with the security agencies in bordering states like Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh have been strengthened to keep Maoists at bay,” director general of police R P Sharma told journalists after meeting with the touring election commission officials here on Friday.The Maoists in September last year gunned down two politicians of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh. Police said the elected representatives are being sensitised to take adequate precautions while visiting Maoist-hit areas. “We keep revising the SOP for security forces, depending on situations. Clear guidelines have already been issued to ensure that the SOP during their movement in Maoist areas is duly followed,” Sharma told the media. Police said personal security officers (PSOs) of MLAs, MPs and ministers have been advised to inform SPs in advance regarding their travel plans.Odisha had witnessed the sensational abduction of former BJD MLA Jhina Hikaka by Maoists in Koraput district on March 24, 2012. The Maoists freed Hikaka unharmed on April 26 the same year. There were a few instances where panchayat representatives were attacked and killed by Maoists in Odisha in the past.
