Puri ‘Rath Yatra’ Making Its Way To Pages Of History, No More A ‘Bhakta-Bhagwan’ Affair!

The ball has been set rolling towards the world famous Car Festival
(Rath Yatra) of lord Jagannath. Step by step the servitors of Puri
temple have been able to restore to bridge the gap that was coming in
between holding of the festival and stalling it because of Covid
menace.

This time, as decided by the management committee of the temple, on
Saturday, it is going to be an entirely televised exercise that draws
the dividing line between the God and his lakhs of devotees from home
and abroad.

No More `Bhakta-Bhagwan` Affair

The ‘Snan Yatra’ (bathing ceremony) of the three deities shall be an
indoor affair in which besides the swashbuckling servitors and a few
officials, it is the official television who would play the
broadcsters of the entire proceeding.

When the deities are brought out onto a pedestal and given the sacred
bath amid chanting of ‘slokas’ and percussions. The occasion is viewed
as a precursor to the final day when they are taken on to the three
chariots by over 150 servitors.

It all sounds unprecedented yet true. The information came from none
other than the King of Puri, Divya Singh Deb, who happens to be the
chairman of the temple management committee.

That  being done, the more challenging phase will be the Rath Yatra,
on June 23, for which an advance prescription has been sounded by the
King.

To say that, there shall be not a single devotee, in and around Puri,
with all the entry points sealed watertight, that sounds a bit
oxymoronic when the 400 plus years of tradition rests on one
philosophy that is, ‘Bhakta Ra Bhagwan’( God of the devotee).

Government Under Pressure!

So lakhs of devotees shall  see the Lord only in the TV screens,
burring their wishes to have a physical glimpse of Him and worship.

Somehow, it sounds as if the government has given-in to the
the intransigence of some pressure in general and of the priest community
in particular.

On one side when the Naveen-led government struggles  hard to fight
the Covid with all seriousness, it sounds unlikely that, the same
dispensation shall prefer a tightrope walk at such a critical juncture
to endorse any bit of risk on the health front.
