Deluge after disease, Odisha battles nature at two fronts

By D N Singh. Long silence after the Covid was suddenly broken by spells of rains in Odisha. No respite from any side. The rise in number of positive cases is worrisome and now the imperial contempt of nature is something that has doubled the apprehensions of the marginalized class.

Long silence after the Covid was suddenly broken by spells of rains in Odisha. No respite from any side. The rise in number of positive cases is worrisome and now the imperial contempt of nature is something that has doubled the apprehensions of the marginalized class.

Lets look at the complexity of the situation. When the entire humanity remains exposed to the contagion of the contaminations which is perhaps is more dangerous than the preventions. Natural calamities are something that the state of Odisha is used to but a pandemic of such magnitude is surely murderous.

A major part of Odisha today remains marooned, 16 are reported dead and over 8 lakhs affected, dislodging thousands from their roots, thousands of acres of paddy fields and other crops have been literally washed away by floods. The plight of lakhs of farmers cannot be fathomed sitting here at the state capital. They were already browbeaten by the curse of Covid, farming activities suffered a severe jolt in last four months and now the deluge has dealt a lethal blow.

It has really crippled the agro-economy significantly and a repair through packages may only serve as a self back-patting opportunity for the political executives only. ‘We did this and we did that’ and then central team would come to assess the damages and by the time the grant comes, the next calamity would abandon another shock.

A few days or weeks may be invested for the media when ruling and the opposition parties would lock horns over the damages and failures on the part of the government in dealing with the situation after the floods.

Forecast about another depression in the Bay of Bengal in the first week of September has multiplied the fears of the farming sector.

Financial slump due joblessness by a majority is the net result that may be multiplied after the floods. It has already spilled out into the open as a sizable number of migrants who came during the COVID peak, are now a restless lot and some have gone and rest are ready to go back to their place of jobs in other states.

Whatever may be the interpretation on the Corona invasion, but all analysis dovetail on nature. Be it flood or drought or any tidal invasion or disease, somewhere and somehow, when we look back, reminiscences of a nature battered over decades by excess human activity remains the pivotal reason.

We have refused to learn from mistakes and we will not tend to learn, other than lectures in meetings.
