A pungent mix of political and personal developments has come up in Odisha making things bit murky for the Biju Janata Dal supremo Naveen Patnaik to take a call on the party’s member of parliament from Kendrapada Lok sabha seat. A choice which may have some adverse spin offs politically.

An Ollywood hero, pitch forked as a star, Anubhav Mohanty was few years back handpicked by the Naveen Patnaik from the celluloid world and was made a politician  as a Rajya sabha member later to become a giant killer defeating Baijayant Panda from Kendrapada in 2019 polls.

Mohanty, who suddenly wore a swashbucklers image politically, winning  the prestigious seat. undeniably on the strength of the fame and popularity of Naveen Patnaik, as many in BJD do, was subsequently consumed by a kind of self-estimation. Soon some of his acts pushed him to a state where his moral legitimacy as an MP faced question marks.

 From incidents like brawls with local youths to an uncivil dispositions with the media men and a litany of such happenings had him shrouded in a climate that allegedly smelt of lopsidedness of the Odia cine star’s characteristics. Those obviously did not behoove the stature forced upon him politically.

There were occasions when his instincts appeared visibly split between decent and the odds and the divides were easily fathomed by the people and the media.

The Dark Underbelly

Some of his earlier traits were, may be, tolerated by his political masters and fans but, when the private life conflicts came to the public domain and that too his estranged relationship with his own wife, it grew to be incriminating in essence when see in detail.

Reportedly Mohanty has filed a divorce petition in the Patiala House Court  against his wife Barsha Priyadarshini, who is also a known and famous leading Odia actress.

Mohanty has gone to the details behind the marital discord which normally is extremely private and never thrown up to public glare without a pressing reason. He has, in his petition, sidestepped all boundaries to portray his wife in poor colours, holding her responsible for all the alleged prejudices those shattered the marital and conjugal balance.

In her defense, Barsha, in a counter petition filed in the Orissa High Court has also been unsparing in her innuendos. She has charged her husband not only of being a husband who often resorted to physical and mental assault but, she has also charged him of disloyalty citing instances how he tried to have drink parties at home with his friends. She has further said that, how thoughtlessly Mohanty often tried to keep relationship with other women and even co-actors paying no heed to her sentiments. 

Whatever may be the outcome from the judicial side but, a member of parliament getting implicated in an open legal row with his wife and that also of incriminating nature, the BJD supremo has a reason to ponder if a man who occupies a seat in the parliament can still be allowed to revel in his wrongs, if any, those may turn surreptitious in the days to some.

Can he(CM) fire the MP right now or allow the controversy to transfigure into darker and darker to become unacceptable to the people who voted for him.
