Odisha becomes the fifth state to launch a global tender after Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Maharashtra; meanwhile, Odisha has appealed to the central government to provide tax exemptions in the import of the vaccines so that the financial burden can be reduced to some extent. This decision to issue the global tender was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

During the meeting, it was also decided to form a technical team for rapid purchase and vaccination. Odisha wants to import vaccines to vaccinate its people in the age group of 18-44. Presently, the state is receiving Covishield and Covaxine made by Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech. The state hopes to fetch the Russian vaccine Sputnik-V, which is 91 % effective and has been produced by Russia`s Gamalia Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology.

The Odisha government`s decision to issue a global tender has come to light after the vaccine supply slowed down drastically. Several senior citizens were refused of their second dose in Balasore, Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts, after which they also staged a sit-in protest against the administration. People have alleged that they have been visiting the centre every second day for their second jab, but the vaccine is out
According to the state`s chief secretary Suresh Mohapatra, this important decision has been taken to increase the pace of vaccination in the state. Not only this, the state government has appealed to the Center to exempt vaccine import from taxes.
