Odisha suffered a loss of Rs 610 crores due to Cyclone Yaas

The storm caused a loss of Rs 520 crore to government properties and Rs 90 crore to private properties.

The Odisha government in its assessment on Wednesday found that the state has suffered a loss of around Rs 610 crore due to the recent cyclone `Yaas` and affected around 60 lakh people in 11,000 villages in the coastal areas.
This was mentioned in the review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here.

The storm caused a loss of Rs 520 crore to government properties and Rs 90 crore to private properties.

Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena, who attended the review meeting of the Chief Minister, informed that Rs 66 crore is required for the relief operation.

In this regard, an official said that the assessment of the damage will be submitted to the central government.

Jena informed in the meeting that 150 villages were submerged due to high sea waves during the cyclone.

The cyclone made landfall near Bahanaga in Balasore district, near Dhamra port on May 26 morning and affected the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapara poorly.

Last week, PM Modi had sanctioned immediate assistance of ₹500 crores for Odisha after conducting an aerial tour of the affected regions. Odisha had made two long-term demands, a disaster-resilient power system and a disaster and resilient coastal protection system to deal with storm surges.
