Crusher worker’s death triggers tension

A labourer died while another sustained grievous injuries in a mishap at a stone crusher unit at Rahadapur village under Dharmasala block of Jajpur district on Sunday. The mishap occurred when the labourers were changing the wheels of the machine. The identities of the deceased and the injured were yet to be ascertained. The injured was initially admitted to a nearby hospital, but he was later shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. Tension was sparked in the area following the mishap with locals alleging that the crusher unit was running illegally without any licence. The locals were furious after finding the body of the deceased labourer in the back of a pickup truck with a black polythene sheet on it. The locals alleged that the owner of the crusher unit was trying to dispose of the body clandestinely in order to evade police probe. They blocked the road near Samparu village demanding appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased and injured. No crusher unit in this area has NOC to operate. No local labourers get work at the units. The owners are bringing labourers from other States to work here. A yet-to-be-identified labourer from an unknown place was injured when a loose wheel of the crusher machine came out. He died on the to way to hospital, said some locals We demand Rs 50 lakh as compensation for the deceaseds family. We want the owner of the crusher unit to come here and produce his documents in front of the Magistrate, they demanded.
