The NHRC passed the order on a petition filed by activist Radhakanta Tripathy. The petitioner stated that by the end of January, the death toll due to jaundice in Sambalpur town has reached 17 while a filthy drainage system and damaged water supply pipelines are being blamed for the spread of the disease in the town that has a population of nearly 2 lakh. Due to inaction of the State Health officials the disease has spread its wings to other districts.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) to act over the large scale outbreak of jaundice in the State.

“The failure of the Government especially of the Health department in acting over the issue amounts to serious violation of basic human rights,” Tripathy alleged. He requested the NHRC to investigate the case by a team of experts and direct the Union Health Ministry and State Health department to act on a war footing to control jaundice.

In its order the NHRC said, “Let the complaint be transferred to the Odisha State Human Rights Commission for disposal.”
