BHUBANESWAR: A youth allegedly tried to kill his girlfriend by pushing her into a defunct well in Birmaharajpur area of Sonepur district. The incident happened while they were eloping from their houses on Friday evening.Police sources said a youth, Jagabandhu Pradhan , 28, of Khuntlapalli village had developed love relationship with a 25-year-old girl of his village. The girl was asking him to marry her. But he was avoiding her during last one year.On Friday, Jagabandhu surprisingly asked her to go with him to a temple for marriage. The girl followed his direction and went with him. They reached near a canal at the end of their village in the evening. During their discussion, they had altercation regarding a personal issue. The youth had assaulted her lover and pushed her into a defunct well, alleged the girl.SP (Sonepur) Prafulla Kumar Patra said the youth left the girl there and fled from the spot. The girl returned to village and narrated her ordeal before her family members. A meeting was organised in the village on Friday night to discuss on the issue, he added."The village committee couldn't solve the matter. Family members lodged an FIR with Birmaharajpur police station on Saturday morning. The police registered a case against the youth for cheating the girl by promising a lawful marriage and attempting to murder her," he added.Patra denied that the youth had raped the girl before trying to kill her. "They are adult people. They were in a relationship during last one year. The girl has not mentioned anything about rape," he added.He said the youth is absconding since Friday evening. "We are trying to nab him soon," he added.
