Frustrated over police inquiry, IIT scholar traces his stolen phone on his own

Asutosh Acharya , a PhD scholar of IIT Bhubaneswar , had filed a complaint with the Saheed Nagar police after his mobile phone was stolen on Sunday. But an IIT scholar didn't depend on the police to trace his phone and started his investigation to know its whereabouts. BHUBANESWAR: A person usually files a complaint with the police after losing a mobile phone and sometimes loses hope to get the mobile back. Inquiry is going on to trace the phone, he added. When the shop owner inserted his SIM to unlock the phone, an alert message came to his email.

But an IIT scholar didn't depend on the police to trace his phone and started his investigation to know its whereabouts. Asutosh Acharya , a PhD scholar of IIT Bhubaneswar , had filed a complaint with the Saheed Nagar police after his mobile phone was stolen on Sunday. When the police didn't take any action, he got disappointed and started using his idea and technology to trace the device.Acharya was on a visit on Saturday to his friend in the Utkal University hostel at Vani Vihar here. The mobile was stolen on Sunday morning from the hostel. He immediately lodged a complaint with the Saheed Nagar police regarding the incident.Though the police assured him to probe the case, he was not satisfied with the pace of the investigation process. He used his idea and tried to trace the phone. The Mi Note 3 phone (worth Rs 12,000) has Mi Cloud facility. Acharya had earlier connected the cloud with his gmail account. The thief was unable to unlock the phone, so he took it to a mobile repairing centre. When the shop owner inserted his SIM to unlock the phone, an alert message came to his email."After getting the phone number, I tracked the number with the help of Facebook and WhatsApp. We got photo of the person from WhatsApp and identity from the Facebook. I later sent friend request to mutual friends of the person and then came in contact with the shopkeeper at Haridaposhi in Tigiria of Cuttack district. I extracted information from the shopkeeper by posing as a police officer," said Acharya.Later the shop keeper shared information regarding the thief and his address. "Finally I got details about thief's address and went to his home in a slum near the university. He was not in the home, but his family members gave it to me. I informed about phone recovery to the police," said the IITian.A senior police officer of the Saheed Nagar police station on Wednesday said a complaint in this regard has been filed a few days ago. Inquiry is going on to trace the phone, he added.
