"In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had felicitated kin of the 1817 heroes in Bhubaneswar while earlier this month BJP president Amit Shah had started his three-day Odisha tour by garlanding the statue of Buxi Jagabandhu. "A statue of 1817 hero Buxi Jagabandhu similar in grandeur to the Statue of Liberty (New York), Sardar Patel's statue of unity on Narmada and Shivaji's statue in Maharashtra will inspire the future generations," he said.President Pranab Mukherjee attended the event and said, "Paika Bidroha was not just a rebellion but was one of the earliest freedom movements. BHUBANESWAR: The war between BJP and BJD to appropriate the legacy of the historic 'Paika Bidroha' (rebellion) reached its peak on Thursday coinciding with the Centre's commemorative event in New Delhi for the 1817 armed uprising against the British East India Company.Attending the event, chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced his government's intention to erect a 'Paika Amar Jyoti Stamba' a pillar in the memory of the valiant 'Paikas', which added to the series of initiatives he has announced in the recent days. "The government will also hold a national seminar in New Delhi on the the farmer-warriors rebellion against the British East India Company 200 years ago, to highlight its historical significance," he said.Reiterating the state cabinet recommendation to the Centre to acknowledge it as the first war of independence, Naveen also sought a commemorative postage stamp on the Paika rebellion.Earlier, he had sought a new AC express train from Khurda Road to Mumbai via Sambalpur to be named after Buxi Jagabandhu and named a drinking water scheme after the Paika hero Buxi Jagabandhu. What was seen as a check on Naveen's way of remembering the revolt, petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan suggested a permanent memorial for the rebellion to inspire people for the next 1,000 years and not just round-the year meetings to mark 200 years of the rebellion.Pradhan requested Naveen to provide land at Barunei hill in Khurda, the ground zero of the 1817 uprising, for raising a memorial.
