Man torches tehsildar’s car in Angul over sand mining issue

BHUBANESWAR: A man has torched car of Chhendipada tehsildar in Angul district after the latter prevented him to lift sand from a local river without paying revenue. "He got violent during last one month after he couldn't get success in lifting sand illegally," he added. He got irritated with my action and telephoned me on Monday afternoon to allow him to lift sand. The contractors having valid permission have started lifting sand a month ago. But Nayak tried to lift sand from the river bed without paying royalty, he added.

BHUBANESWAR: A man has torched car of Chhendipada tehsildar in Angul district after the latter prevented him to lift sand from a local river without paying revenue. Tehsildar lodged a complaint with the police on Tuesday regarding the incident.Police sources said the accused identified as Priyabrata Nayak , 30, alias Papu of Chhendipada has been trying to lift sand from nearby Aunli river without having a valid permission from the local tehsildar Pratap Pritimay . The officer never allowed Nayak to do so."When the officer stopped Nayak to lift sand, the latter planned to take revenge and torched Pritimay's personal car parked in front of his government quarter at around 9.30 pm on Monday. Around 20 per cent of the car is damaged due to the fire," said Chhendipada police station inspector-in-charge Dinakrushna Mishra Mishra said he registered a case against Nayak after the tehsildar lodged a complaint with them at around 1.30 am on Tuesday. "The accused is on the run. We will arrest him very soon," he added.Pritimay said a tender to lift sand from the river had been issued in the name of a construction company one year ago. Nayak was an agent of that company. The tender period was over six months ago. But Nayak tried to lift sand from the river bed without paying royalty, he added."I stopped him twice earlier. He got irritated with my action and telephoned me on Monday afternoon to allow him to lift sand. I again told him about the rules. After this, he hung up the phone. In the night, I saw my car catches fire. When I rushed to the parking space, I found Nayak fleeing from the spot," said the tehsildar.He said lifting sand from the river was stopped due to rainy season. The contractors having valid permission have started lifting sand a month ago. "He got violent during last one month after he couldn't get success in lifting sand illegally," he added.
