Two held for threatening Odisha BJP chief at gunpoint

BHUBANESWAR: Panic gripped BJP 's state headquarters here on Monday after two gun-toting men, one of them an engineering student, stormed into the party state president Basant Panda 's chamber and threatened him at gunpoint. "We seized the firearms and checked that those were toy guns. This enraged us and we wielded the toy guns," Panda said.BJP disowned the accused, who belonged to Baranga area on city outskirts, as party workers.

BHUBANESWAR: Panic gripped BJP 's state headquarters here on Monday after two gun-toting men, one of them an engineering student, stormed into the party state president Basant Panda 's chamber and threatened him at gunpoint. The accused, Pinaki Mohanty , 35 and Samibit Kumar Panda, 23 said they were aggrieved on Basant as he did not spare time to listen to their grievances.The Kharavel Nagar police arrested the duo and said the accused used toy guns to intimidate Basant. The brazen incident occurred around 12 pm when Basant and other leaders were busy in a meeting at the party office. Creating flutter, Mohanty and Panda intimidated everyone by brandishing the firearms and turned the trigger on the party chief's head. Jittery people ran for shelter while others overpowered the duo and informed the police. Later BJP leader Rajendra Prasad Panda lodged a complaint with the police."We seized the firearms and checked that those were toy guns. Their motive of creating ruckus in the party office is being investigated," commissioner of police Y B Khurania told TOI.The accused claimed themselves as BJP workers. "We had been unsuccessfully trying to meet Basant Panda for past few days to put forth our grievances. We wanted to tell him that a television reality show recently portrayed Goddess Durga in poor light. We wanted to request him to stage a protest," said Mohanty, adding "the party chief kept us avoiding."Panda, an engineering student, said Basant shouted at them when they requested him in his chamber to listen to the grievance. "We have been working for the party since years. But the party boss did not have time to pay heed to us. This enraged us and we wielded the toy guns," Panda said.BJP disowned the accused, who belonged to Baranga area on city outskirts, as party workers. "They are not our party workers. I don't know them. They never drew my attention on any issue or grievance. They might have been sent by some goons to browbeat us. Their hooliganism in broad daylight exhibits lawless in the state," Basant told media persons.
