AG Punjab retain North Zone title

Tribune News ServiceChandigarh, January 11Defending champions Audit General (AG) Punjab regained their title as they beat archrivals AG Haryana 6-5 in the tie-break in the final of the North Zone IA&AD Football Tournament at the Sector 42 football stadium. Both the teams have qualified for the All-India IA&AD Football Tournament, which will commence at the same venue from January 13. AG Punjab had the majority of the possession for the first 25 minutes. As both the teams were not new to each other, the match started on an exciting note. The maturity of the players was seen as the first half of the match witnessed only two fouls.

Chandigarh, January 11 Defending champions Audit General (AG) Punjab regained their title as they beat archrivals AG Haryana 6-5 in the tie-break in the final of the North Zone IA&AD Football Tournament at the Sector 42 football stadium. As both the teams were not new to each other, the match started on an exciting note. Both played with four midfielders and two strikers to make their intentions clear. AG Punjab had the majority of the possession for the first 25 minutes. The maturity of the players was seen as the first half of the match witnessed only two fouls. After the lemon break, the playing tactics remained unchanged. Though, Haryana added one striker to improve their attack, no goal was scored. The only golden chance came in the dying minutes of the match for Haryana when their striker Harminder Singh got full control of the ball in front of an open goal. However, the left-in missed the chance. In 30 minutes of extra time, no team could score. After the extra time, the match’s fate was decided on penalties. As both the teams were experienced to handle the situation, the score remained at par after the first five spot kicks.Punjab’s goalie Manveer Singh then blocked Harvinder Pal’s shot to the left corner, before successfully converting his team’s sixth attempt. Both the teams have qualified for the All-India IA&AD Football Tournament, which will commence at the same venue from January 13.
