CHANDIGARH: The occupants of boys’ hostel number 5 are planning to start a co-operative mess from 2018-19 session, for which they have already submitted a proposal with signatures of 210 students to the hostel authorities. “This system of hostel mess works on no-profit-no-loss basis. The authorities have already allowed us to introduce the system in our hostel provided we meet the requirements. If implemented, this would be the second co-operative mess of the hostel to be entirely managed by students. However, the hostellers will have to pay a security deposit of Rs 6,200 to the authorities to introduce the cooperative mess system in their hostel.“We have no objection in introducing co-operative mess system in our hostels. “We will prepare our own menu and there will be no additional charges for salad and chutney.

The only concern is that the students should meet the requirements, which include 50% of the hostellers should agree to the decision and the hostellers should be able to deposit the security,” said dean of student welfare (DSW) Emanual Nahar Sandeep Kumar, a research scholar in the public administration department and an occupant of hostel number 5, said they have already formed a co-operative mess committee (CMC-5) to chalk out a plan for the working of the cooperative mess. “This system of hostel mess works on no-profit-no-loss basis. The authorities have already allowed us to introduce the system in our hostel provided we meet the requirements. Now, we are just waiting for the new hostellers to join us as we need to submit the security deposit,” said Kumar.Listing out the advantages of the co-operative mess, Kumar said when students take over the management part of the mess, the quality of food improves. “We will prepare our own menu and there will be no additional charges for salad and chutney. We will have eight mess workers, one accountant, one manager and a cook for the mess and we will look after its all over functioning,” added Kumar.Earlier this year, the DSW office and wardens conducted a survey in the hostels asking the hostellers whether they want GST to be implemented in the hostels or cooperative mess to get exemption from GST.According to the proposal submitted to the authority, the co-operative mess will be operated by the research scholars in the boys’ hostel number 5.
