Sangrur double murder: Prime accused surrenders

PATIALA: The prime accused in the Sangrur double murder case , in which former member of the Railway Board Dr Charanjit Garg and his wife Pooja were shot dead on Sunday night, Rakesh Sharma alias Jassi on Wednesday surrendered before the court of the chief judicial magistrate at Patiala.After being taken into custody, he was handed over to the Sangrur police on a transit remand with instructions that apprehensions expressed by the accused that the Sangrur police could torture him to extract a false confession were serious in nature and he should be produced before the concerned magistrate at Sangrur without any unnecessary delay.Counsel for Jassi said as they feared the victim was politically well connected, the cops could use third-degree methods on him by keeping him in illegal custody before showing his arrest due to which it was decided that he would surrender before the Patiala court The Sangrur police have already arrested two other accused in the case including Jassi’s brother Pradeep Sharma and former councillor of the Sangrur civic body Anupam Kumar alias Pompey, while the fourth accused identified as Jojo is still on the run.Jassi had taken a loan of Rs 7 lakh from Dr Garg out of which he had returned Rs 2 lakh and the remaining Rs 5 lakh had become a bone of contention between the accused and the against the victim.Dr Garg and his wife had been shot dead in Sangrur at around 11pm on Sunday night after which a case against four persons on a statement given by Dr Garg’ brother Karamjit, who had stated that on Sunday night his brother had called him up and told him that he had been ambushed by four persons on Ranbir College road.
