MOHALI: Despite Gmada's restrictions, unauthorised shops of construction material are on a rise in Mohali . A TOI team found that many such traders were stationed at various new sectors, which fall under the Gmada's preview. The sellers stack up building material - sand, gravel and bricks - to sell them further. They also have tractor trolleys, gravel filled tipper trucks and JCB machines to facilitate their businesses. The team found that Sectors like 88, 79, 78, 77, 69, 67 and Madanpura crossing, where new constructions are mushrooming, have become a hub of such shops."We were not aware of any such activity. We will check it and remove such unauthorised shops. There are no permissions or provisions to sell building material at non-designated places," Said Gmada estate officer Baljit Walia."It has become very irritating for the residents. The traders operate heavy trucks full of construction material. This not only spills gravel and brinks on the roads but also breaks the roads. Not only this, with unidentified people driving in our neighbourhood, we do not feel safe. We have been complaining to Gmada but no action has been taken as yet," said Sector 79 residents welfare association president Mohinder Pal Singh. When the TOI discussed the matter with deputy commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra, she said that she would issue a letter to Gmada's chief administrator and would direct her to take strict action against such sellers."No one is allowed to sell construction material from non-designated places,"She added.Sapra said that no such laxity on the part of the officials will be allowed and strict action will also be taken if any official is found negligent in performing duties.
