CHANDIGARH: Panjab University offices may soon be seen encouraging use of Hindi words, including 'namaskar' , 'shriman ji', 'mahoday' , 'manyavar' instead of English words like 'good morning/good evening'. The university's syndicate in its meeting to be held on September 23 will take up the MHRD directive to encourage the use of 'rajbhasha' in the offices and various societies. The university has already formed a five-member committee that had met on July 20. Moreover, the university is also considering setting up a directorate of Hindi at the university. The committee in its meeting observed that the concern of the MHRD letter regarding the use of national language in offices and society was an advisory and not a directive. It then observed that keeping in view the spirit of the letter, honour should be given to 'rajbhasha' and its vocabulary while interacting with each other instead of persistent use of a foreign language. Moreover, the committee also discussed that setting up of a directorate of Hindi was under consideration and all such matters related to the use of Hindi language should be dealt with by that directorate in future. The committee then finally resolved that the MHRD letter encouraging the use of Hindi should be circulated among all departments for compliance at their own level. Sources said that the committee has also recommended that there should be a Hindi officer at the directorate and Hindi translators as well, who can further translate the official documents of English into Hindi. The MHRD had also sent another communication, stating that the handbook of information should also be provided in Hindi language and a separate committee be formed to look into the matter, said the sources. The PU had received the letter on June 12 and a committee had been formed by former vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover. Following this, the committee had convened its first meeting on July 20. The committee was chaired by dean of university instructions. According to the MHRD letter, university officers should take pride in using Hindi in offices.
