CHANDIGARH: From October 2, the municipal corporation (MC) will not charge a single penny from residents who segregate garbage. The incentive will be for two months to boost collection of segregated garbage from each household. Residents, who will not follow the practice, will have to pay the lifting charges as usual.“We will collect segregated garbage through our tractor trolleys by making partitions in the vehicles till new vehicles and other related infrastructure are in place. We will not charge money from residents segregating garbage for two months,” said K K Yadav , municipal commissioner, after the decision was taken during the finance and contract committee (F&CC) meeting of the MC on Friday.Since charges vary according to the size of houses, they would be collected through water bills. Currently, no penalty charges will be imposed on residents for not segregating garbage. The MC will focus on running awareness campaigns and carry out initiatives. “We will make people aware about the issue of solid waste management policy, which includes segregation and other aspects, through awareness drives,” Yadav said.Earlier, the F&CC) accorded approval to hire 152 tractor trolleys and vehicles for doorto-door collection on emergency basis from commercial areas and households. The committee also fixed timings of tractor trolleys to lift garbage from households from 7am to 3pm. The committee decided to lift horticulture waste from sectors and other parts of the city on every Sundays.The agenda items related to the approval of procurement of solution for spraying at dumping ground and purchase of three tractor trolleys for use in horticulture division have also been approved.
