Man posing as banker dupes HCS officer’s wife

PANCHKULA:The wife of a Haryana Civil Services ( HCS ) officer was duped of her money soon after she lodged a complaint with the Sector 10 branch of State Bank of India (SBI) regarding an ATM issue.A complaint was given to the cops by husband of the victim, HCS Sudhanshu Gautam, former joint director, public relations department, Haryana. Sudhanshu in his complaint to the cops informed that his wife Meghna, works as a dental surgeon in civil dispensary, Sector 21, Panchkula In a telephonic conversation with TOI, Meghna said, “I had gone for some shopping. I went inside the SBI ATM booth to take out money worth Rs 34,600. When I swiped my card in th ATM machine, the money got deducted from my bank account but no cash was dispensed by the machine. I tried three times but no cash was dispensed out by the machine.”Meghna visited the bank’s Sector 10, Panchkula branch and went to the complaint desk and reported about the incident. She then met the general manager (GM) of the bank and the general manager according to Meghna moved an online complaint and assured that her money will be refunded to her account soon.Within couple of hours, Meghna received a call from a mobile number 8918191278. The caller claimed to be a representative from SBI customer helpline. He asked about personal details of Meghna’s bank account at fault.Meghna googled the customer helpline number and found the same number being shown on the search engine under the name SBI Sector 10 and trusting the same caller as an SBI customer care representative, she shared her bank details with him and also the one time password (OTP) received on her mobile number.Within minutes, the caller made a transaction of Rs 19,999 from her bank account. The accused then attempted to take out money thrice from the account but Meghna blocked her ATM card. Station house officer, inspector Arvind Kumar, the investigation officer, said, “We have registered a case based on the complaint. The investigation is going on into the matter.”When contacted branch head Sector 10 SBI bank, S K Sethi, he said “Customer should never share his/her personal details with anyone. Everybody must use official site of SBI to check official number of the bank and don’t believe on google top searches. We are taking steps to remove our fake number appearing on google’s top search.”
