Water treatment: Purchase of 32-acre land okayed

"We have passed a resolution to purchase 32 acre land for setting up treatment plant under the project. The residents will now get canal water instead of groundwater. The water will be stored and treated at the 32-acre plant in Ablowal village under the first phase. It has been learned that waters of Bhakhra canal and a Ghaggar River channel will be treated at this plant. As much as 33 cusecs of water is drawn from these tube wells to meet the requirements of the locals.

PATIALA: In its finance and contract committee meeting on Thursday, the Patiala municipal corporation gave green light to purchase 32 acre land in Ablowal village so that installation and operations of the water-treatment plant under the canal-based drinking water project can be commenced. It has been learned that waters of Bhakhra canal and a Ghaggar River channel will be treated at this plant."We have passed a resolution to purchase 32 acre land for setting up treatment plant under the project. The residents will now get canal water instead of groundwater. The land will be purchased soon. We will now have to bag consent from farmers to buy their land. They will be duly compensated," said deputy mayor Y S Yogi."Around 34 cusecs of water will be drawn from Bhakra main line crossing that originates from the Nangal dam and crosses boundaries of Patiala. The water will be stored and treated at the 32-acre plant in Ablowal village under the first phase. In the second phase, we are planning to fetch water from Ghaggar-link canal," Yogi added.One month ago, Asian Development Bank (ADB) had approved Rs 525-crore investment for setting up of a canal-based drinking water plant in Patiala. The project that will cost around Rs 750 crore, will get Rs 225 crore from the state government.Captain Amarinder Singh had brought this project during his previous term, however, after the change of guards and SAD (B) coming to power, the project was ignored. After coming to power after ten years, Amarinder announced the revival of the project.Despite the fact that the Bhakhra main line crosses three different parts of the district, Patiala residents do not get canal water for drinking.There are around 134 tube wells installed by the Patiala municipal corporation. As much as 33 cusecs of water is drawn from these tube wells to meet the requirements of the locals. Around 60% of residents have installed their own pumps to meet their daily needs.
