Panchkula to have 1st street vendor market

PANCHKULA: The Panchkula municipal corporation will soon have its first street vendor market at Sector 19 . Around 2,700 street vendors will be rehabilitated by the civic body in Panchkula under this project.Accoridng to officials, the street vendor survey was conducted by a mobile-based application using GIS mapping with digital photograph of vendors under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. The Parliament had passed the said Act that guarantees them the right to work as street vendors. The civic body will soon release budget of around Rs 1 crore for the construction of the vending market. Similar projects to allocate site to the street vendors are in the pipeline in Chandigarh and Mohali as well.Municipal commissioner Rajesh Jogpal said, "Work allocation of the street vending zone has been finalised and soon the construction work will start.

Sources of the MC said the said market would be constructed on one acre where around 450 stalls would be allocated to the registered vendors.Panchkula will be the first MC in the Tricity to started construction work on the street vending site. Similar projects to allocate site to the street vendors are in the pipeline in Chandigarh and Mohali as well.Municipal commissioner Rajesh Jogpal said, "Work allocation of the street vending zone has been finalised and soon the construction work will start. The civic body will soon release budget of around Rs 1 crore for the construction of the vending market."As per the design plan,there will be toilets in the area, besides drinking water facility will also be provided to the shopkeepers and the shoppers. The MC has designed coloured crates with geo-tagging for the vendors and in case the vendors shifted from their allocated space, the officials in the MC would come to know and fine would be imposed on the defaulters.As per the MC plan, the authorities have identified 24 places in the city for street vending zones.
