CHANDIGARH: The ministry of home affairs has asked the Chandigarh Police to explain the need to recruit 1,355 constables, posing a series of questions to the department having the best police-public ration in the country.In its correspondence with UT police DGP, the ministry has said when cases pertaining to women can be handled by the existing staff, what is requirement for women staff in the department?The ministry has also pointed out when Delhi Police can appoint constables and use them as drivers when needed, why can’t the UT police adopt this method. “Why do you need separate constables for driver and policing?” the ministry asked. It has also demanded the number of complaints received by the police stations and other units in the last five years, elaborate the methods of policing and provide reasons for the staff proposed.The DGP office had sent a communication to all its units and three divisions to provide these details within two days on March 11, 2019 , but most have not done so.Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) had recommended 2,066 cops for 11 police stations in 2009. Despite having the best police-public ration, the city’s 17 police stations have 1,655 personnel.
