Fire destroys another factory in Mohali

Apart from revamping and modernisation of the fire wing, the authorities should make it compulsory for the units to hold periodic fire drills so that their employees are ready to deal with any eventuality. MOHALI: A corrugated box manufacturing unit was destroyed in a fire at Industrial Area, Phase VIII B, on Tuesday, days after a thinner manufacturing unit went up in flames in Industrial Area, Phase VII, on March 15. Sanchit Industries owned by Tejinder K Bansal was manufacturing boxes and offset printings cards, lighting accessories, electronic ballast and light fittings. Firemen had to break the boundary wall to reach the corrugated paper rolls stacked along the wall.Karam Chand Sood, fire officer, said the fire station received a call at 6.36 am. Within few minutes, two fire tenders reached the spot but by then the factory was up in flames.Sood said, “The intensity of the fire was so high that apart from fire tenders from Mohali making 15 to 20 rounds, two fire bowsers from Chandigarh and one fire tender from Derabassi were also pressed into action. We had to fill the fire tenders from Quark City and Godrej factory to speed up the firefighting work. It took us 10 hours to douse the fire. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.”Sood said the fire department also pressed JCBs into action to lift the corrugated paper rolls. He said JCBs were also used to remove paper rolls to prevent the fire from spreading.Bansal said he is not in condition to ascertain the loss due to fire, but sources said it may run into crores of rupees.
