DERELICTION OF DUTY Two Home Guards jawans ‘discharged’ from service Ambala, June 26 The Superintendent of Police (SP), Mohit Handa, has suspended the SHO of Panjokhra police station and sent two cops to the Police Lines. The SP took action against the policemen in connection with the incident at the Panjokhra police station on June 22. A BJP worker had leveled allegations against personnel of the the Panjokhra police station of thrashing him and his brother and threatening to implicate them under the Arms Act that rocked meeting of the District Public Relations and Grievances Redressal Committee here on Monday. Transport Minister Krishan Lal Panwar had issued directions for the suspension of three policemen and a departmental inquiry in this regard. As per information the SHO, Panjokhra police station, Sub-inspector Gurmail Singh, has been suspended, while Sub-Inspector Ramesh and EHC Shamsher Ali have been sent to the Police Lines. On the other hand, directions have been issued to discharge two Home Guard jawans Manish and Sukhbir from their service for which a letter has been sent to the department concerned. “Action has been taken as per the report produced by the SIT, which was formed to investigate the matter. There is no evidence that the youth was beaten up by the policemen. The policemen involved failed to handle the situation in time and report the matter due to which the department had to face embarrassment,” said Handa. The SIT had recommended transfer of the SHO, but he was suspended, he added. A departmental inquiry was ordered against policemen, he said. The SIT in its report had stated that the Police Department had observed Zero Tolerance Day on June 22. A challan was issued to Amit Kumar as he was not carrying documents and misbehaved with the on-duty policemen on June 22. Amit had levelled allegations of being thrashed by the policemen following which the DSP, Ambala I, Munish Sehgal, and Inspector, CIA-2, were asked to conduct an inquiry. In their report, it was observed that the cause of injuries in the MLR of the Naraingarh hospital was not clear. Besides, the people who were present at the police station on the fateful day had also stated that they had seen the policemen and Amit indulging in a verbal spat, but they didn’t see the former beating the complainant. Amit had also refused to get the medical examination done from a board of doctors. The SIT in its report mentioned that Amit kept arguing with the policemen for a longer period at the police station and still the SHO didn’t take appropriate action against him, which showed laxity on his part. Meanwhile, the BJP’s district general secretary, Rajesh Batoura, said, “Though the SP has taken action, the police are hiding some facts to save the policemen. We have apprehensions that the footage of the CCTV has been tampered with. We will raise the matter with Transport Minister Krishan Panwar.”
