Polythene bags, dump yards lead to waterlogging Ravneet Singh Patiala, July 18 Garbage dumped in the open led to blockage of drains which resulted in waterlogging in the city. While the Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC) took various initiatives to dissuade people from using polythene and throwing trash in the open, nothing seemed to work on the ground. Residents pointed out that open drains in the old Patiala city and near Choti Nadi were covered recently by people to get rid off flies and mosquitoes. As a result, this led to waterlogging. Naveen, a resident of Upkar Nagar said, “Choti Nadi flows through the city and dumping sites have come up near overbridges. These dump yards are created by none other than the MC workers. Residents start throwing garbage at these spots and polythene bags and broken plastic items, among others, flow into the Choti Nadi.” Shanti, whose cousin works with the MC said waste segregation and transportation system needs to be streamlined. “They have given waste segregation and transportation project to a private company. It is yet to be implemented properly,” he said According to the MC officials, the civic body banned sale, manufacturing and stocking of polythene bags. “The Mayor has appealed to stop using polythene bags. We will strengthen our measures to prevent its sale,” said the MC official.
