BRIEFLYChandigarh: A massive plantation drive was carried out at Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, PU, here today. The drive was to create awareness regarding environment among students at the institute, in collaboration with the Horticulture Department of Panjab University. The plantation drive was inaugurated by Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean, University Instruction. IAS Centre entrance heldChandigarh: The IAS Centre, Punjab University, conducted an entrance test for the new batch of students preparing for the IAS exam here on Friday. According to the police, Swarna, alias Sarna, of Deha Colony in Ambala City was apprehended from near the Palika Vihar T-point in Ambala City on Thursday night on the basis of suspicion and her search yielded the contraband.

IAS Centre entrance held Chandigarh: The IAS Centre, Punjab University, conducted an entrance test for the new batch of students preparing for the IAS exam here on Friday. The result of the test will be displayed on July 23 at 12 pm on the notice board at the centre. Around 70 students will be selected for the batch. Anthropology counselling Chandigarh: The counselling for admission to MSc (Hons)-I and Diploma in Forensic Science and Criminology at the Department of Anthropology will be held on July 25 and July 26, respectively. TNS Club owner, manager booked Chandigarh: The owner and a manager of a club have been booked for playing loud music after prescribed time on the intervening night of July 18 and 19. On getting information, a police patrolling team reached Ten Downing Street in the Industrial Area, Phase I, at 1.20 am and found music being played there. The club owner, Suresh Dogra, and manager Rajat failed to produce the permission for playing music after permissible hours. TNS Man arrested with Intoxicants Ambala: The Ambala police have arrested a youth and seized a large number of intoxicating capsules and tablets from him at Ugala Chowk in Barara on Friday. The suspect has been identified as Rahul Kumar, a resident of Barara. According to information, acting on a tip-off Rahul was stopped around 1:20 am and 310 capsules of Parvon Spas and 1,100 Lomotil tablets were recovered from him. The suspect failed to produce any licence regarding the tablets and capsules recovered. A case has been registered. TNS Woman caught with 5-gm smack Ambala: The police have arrested a local woman and claimed to have recovered 5.15-gram smack from her, officials said here on Friday. According to the police, Swarna, alias Sarna, of Deha Colony in Ambala City was apprehended from near the Palika Vihar T-point in Ambala City on Thursday night on the basis of suspicion and her search yielded the contraband. The suspect was produced before a local court, which sent her to judicial custody, the officials said, adding that a case has been registered against her. TNS Three held for stealing bikes Ambala: The police have arrested two persons – Jaswant Singh of Sultanpur in Panchkula and Surinder Singh of Naggal in Ambala – and claimed to have recovered two stolen motorcycles from them, officials said here on Friday. According to the police, the suspects had stolen a motorcycle of a local resident, Gursewak, from near Khalsa High School in Ambala City on June 29 and another bike of Karan Kumar of Ghanaur in Patiala from Railway Colony in Ambala City on June 28. The suspects were sent to one-day police custody by a local court, the officials said. In another case, the police also arrested Vikas Kumar of Naraingarh for stealing a motorcycle of Sachin Kumar of Naraingarh on July 15. He was also sent to one-day police custody. TNS Two proclaimed offenders held Ambala: The police have arrested two proclaimed offenders (POs) Balwinder Singh of Saha in Ambala and Kulbir Singh of Kala Amb in Ambala, officials said here on Friday. According to the police, the accused were wanted in separate criminal cases and were evading arrest following which the competent courts had declared them POs. While Balwinder was sent to judicial custody, Kulbir will be produced before a court on Saturday. TNS Man caught with illicit liquor Dera Bassi: The Mubarikpur CIA staff arrested a person and recovered 20 bottles of illicit liquor from him at a naka near Bhankarpur village here on Friday. The suspect has been identified as Harnam Singh of Bhankarpur village. The CIA staff had laid a naka near the village on Friday. The suspect, who was coming from the Chandigarh side, was signalled to stop for checking. The CIA staff recovered 20 bottles of illicit liquor from him and arrested him. A case has been registered. OC Blood donation camp today Chandigarh: The Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association will organise the sixth blood donation camp at Zakir Hall, Research Block-A, PGIMER, on Saturday. The association organises blood donation camps at the PGIMER and the GMCH-32 every year to save the lives of thalassaemics and other needy patients. This year, the association is planning to organise eight blood donation camps at two city hospitals. TNS
