Complainant Gurdeep Singh Ahluwalia appealed for removal of alleged encroachment upon public verandah outside the shops at the MC premises. As per complainant, the MC had sold 10 shops on its premises through an auction. It said as per conditions of the MC, no one could alter or encroach upon without prior permission of the civic body. The MC’s officials have ignored illegal construction as they are hand-in-glove with the owners.”When contacted, Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Khaira, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, said he has not received the summons yet.

ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION ON MC PREMISES Ravneet Singh Patiala, August 16 A local court has summoned the Patiala Municipal Corporation (MC), Commissioner, and seven others, on September 3 following illegal construction of shops on the premises of the civic body. Complainant Gurdeep Singh Ahluwalia appealed for removal of alleged encroachment upon public verandah outside the shops at the MC premises. The Tribune had reported the matter in July. As per complainant, the MC had sold 10 shops on its premises through an auction. As per an RTI reply given by the MC’s Land Branch, the shops measured 25 and 26 square yards during auction. Later, the owners extended the shops further and covered open area. The court in the orders said the suit has been filed under Section 91 of the Civil Procedure Code for public nuisances and other wrongeful acts affecting the public. It said as per conditions of the MC, no one could alter or encroach upon without prior permission of the civic body. Ahluwalia said, “The shops were sold by the MC upon various conditions, including that the owners will not alter shops in any way. However, they have increased coverage of the shops illegally. The MC’s officials have ignored illegal construction as they are hand-in-glove with the owners.” When contacted, Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Khaira, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, said he has not received the summons yet.
