Begin indefinite strike at Mehmadpur Grain Market Karam Prakash Patiala, September 20 Hundreds of farmers today held a protest on the Patiala-Bathinda highway, near Mehmadpur village, to seek pardon for their union leader Manjit Singh Dhaner, who has been sentenced to a life imprisonment. Activists of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Dakunda, urged Governor VP Singh Badnore to pardon Dhaner. Due to blockade, the police had to divert traffic and commuters had a harrowing time. The protesters planned to march towards the city. However, heavy police force stopped the activists near Mehmadpur village. The agitators claimed that Dhaner was falsely implicated in a murder case, while fighting for justice to Kiranjit Kaur, who was raped and murdered in 1997. Jagmohan Singh, general secretary, Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakunda), said, “It is sad that an activist who was instrumental in getting justice for Kiranjit of Mehar Kalan village, has been given life imprisonment. It is a fight for justice. We will continue our protest until Dhaner is pardoned.” Narain Dutt, one of the three activists, who was implicated in the murder case but set free by the High Court, said, “We had nothing to do with the murder. We happened to be in the Court Complex on the day of murder for appearance in another case. Moreover, we were not on the spot where the murder took place. Dhaner should be given pardon.” Go on indefinite strike After staging a dharna on the highway, the protesters started indefinite strike at Mehmadpur Grain Market.
