Four-wheelers obstruct pathway; traffic wing becomes a mute spectator Satinder Pal Singh Dera Bassi, November 13 On one hand the MC authorities are making efforts to improve the aesthetics of open spaces under the flyover in Dera Bassi, while on the other illegal parking of vehicles beneath the flyover does not seem to be supporting in its endeavour. If you are travelling along the Ambala-Dera Bassi stretch, one can easily find a number of four-wheelers, including tippers, parked illegally under the flyover. Sometimes, these vehicles are lined up along the roadside blocking the pathway as there is no regulatory agency to take action against these offenders. Despite the claims of the police to tighten the noose around those violating norms, violations continue with impunity in the city. As a result, illegal parking under the Dera Bassi flyover has become a common feature. Most drivers and vehicle owners seemed to be oblivious of the parking rules and regulations and they just park their vehicles under the flyover and along the Ambala-Dera Bassi stretch according to their own will. The traffic wing has become a mute spectator to this whole mess. The Dera Bassi-Barwala stretch has also become a favourite spot for drivers coming from outside the city. They park their vehicles along the roadside illegally. The stretch has virtually turned into a truck bay as trucks can be seen parked haphazardly on both sides of the road. Commuters, especially car drivers, sometimes fail to notice trucks parked along the roadside at night, which often leads to road accidents. Residents and shopkeepers alleged that they had brought the issue to the notice of the authorities concerned several times, but to no avail. The traffic in-charge of Dera Bassi said people visiting areas such as Tehsil Complex, sabzi mandi and markets in the town had to struggle a lot to park their vehicles in the absence of any proper parking space. He said they had already written to the higher-ups regarding the lack of parking space in the areas.
