Suffering from a rare congenital orthopaedic disorder with eight toes, Rajwant can now walk normally Karam Prakash Patiala, November 13 “After a long wait of 21 years, my dream of wearing footwear has come true,” said Rajwant. Rajwant (21), who had been suffering from a rare congenital orthopedic disorder with eight toes named the Octopus Clubfoot, since her birth, can now walk normally. Orthopaedic surgeon RL Mittal, Emeritus Professor, Government Medical College (GMC), Patiala, had performed Rajwant’s surgery for free two years ago at Government Mata Kaushyalya Hospital. Rajwant said the surgery was first of its kind in the world and gave her new lease of life. Talking about her recovery after the surgery, she said with a broad smile on her face: “Even though I had to spend six months on the bed during my course of recovery but I am happy today as I can now walk normally. I can even wear my favourite pair of high heels for the first time in my life.” Born to a poor family at Lahore, Majra Kalan village, Fatehgarh Sahib district, Rajwant said she would feel dejected on family occasions when her elder sisters used to wear heels and she had to wear torn shoes because of the deformity. Kaur added that she could now even help her parents in their household chores. “Now, I can lift a water bucket. I perform all household activities too.” Rajwant, who has already completed her higher secondary education, said she desired to study in a college. She said: “I want to go to a college and study further so that I can help my parents financially.” Rajwant was also awarded an appreciation award by the Human Resource Development Minister after her Class X board results. He said: “I have low-cost ring fixator, especially made for Rajwant, from Thapar Institute. I will perform the low-cost Russian limb lengthening technique for height extension.”
