Dehradun’s Womeniya Band casts a spell at crafts mela

Our CorrespondentChandigarh, November 20The Womeniya Band from Dehradun performed on Day 6 of the National Crafts Mela at Kalagram on Wednesday. The all-women band rendered Bollywood songs and fusion of folk and Sufi numbers. Swati mesmerised audience with expertise on playing guitar, harmonium, tabla, sitar and flute among others. Jasvinder Kaur Sidhu, Managing Director, CITCO, was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof Saubhagya Vardhan, Director, NZCC, and Sorabh Kumar Arora, Director, Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh , were present on the occasion.

Our Correspondent Chandigarh, November 20 The Womeniya Band from Dehradun performed on Day 6 of the National Crafts Mela at Kalagram on Wednesday. The all-women band rendered Bollywood songs and fusion of folk and Sufi numbers. They kick-started the show with the enchanting number ‘Saiyaan’ by Kailash Kher, followed by ‘Besabra manjilen’, bands own composition, ‘Ishq mastana’by Sant Kabir in folk and Western fusion, and ‘Jugni ji’. Swati Singh, the founder of the band says, “Women generally abandon their passion due to constraints.” She stresses on the fact that a girl must continue with her work and reflect the spirit through Bollywood songs like ‘Badal pe pav’ from the movie ‘Chak de India’ and title song ‘Saand ki aankh’ from the latest release. Swati mesmerised audience with expertise on playing guitar, harmonium, tabla, sitar and flute among others. The other band members, include first to mention, the mother-daughter combo Shakumbhari Kotnala (mother) on bass guitar and Srividya on drums, Vijul Chawdhery on back vocal, Ayushi Joshi on lead guitar, Komal Gupta on rhythm guitar, Nisha on percussion. Mehul Gupta as sound engineer gave an apt contribution. Jasvinder Kaur Sidhu, Managing Director, CITCO, was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof Saubhagya Vardhan, Director, NZCC, and Sorabh Kumar Arora, Director, Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh , were present on the occasion.
