Cong pushes for resolution condemning Centre, Haryana govt over farmer issues

  • | Tuesday | 12th March, 2024

Congress MLAs, on the sixth day of the ongoing budget session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha, vehemently called for a resolution denouncing the Centre and the Haryana Government for their alleged mistreatment of farmers protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points.   Congress MLA from Gidderbaha Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who is also the state party president, brought forth the pressing issue of the ongoing farmers agitation at the Punjab-Haryana borders during the Zero Hour. Warring passionately advocated for a thorough discussion on farmers grievances and proposed a resolution condemning the Centre and the Haryana Government for their purported atrocities against the protesting farmers.   We should have a one-day debate on farmers issues, he demanded.   The Delhi Chalo march, spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, is a potent expression of farmers demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops. Despite facing resistance from security forces, the farmers have persisted in their protest, stationing themselves at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points.   Echoing the same sentiments, the Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa urged for a comprehensive deliberation in the House on the issues afflicting farmers. Bajwa underscored the importance of solidarity across political lines to support the farmers cause and accused the BJP-led Centre of prioritizing corporate interests over farmers welfare.   In a unified stance, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan pledged to write letters to all Speakers of state assemblies, urging them to stand in solidarity with Punjabs farmers. He emphasized that the farmers struggle transcended regional boundaries and it is not only Punjabs issue, and was a collective fight for the rights of farmers across the nation.   Cong Stages Walkout Over Privilege Motion Against CM   Congress MLA staged a walkout on Monday, citing dissatisfaction over the handling of a privilege motion against the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for alleged derogatory remarks against the Dalit legislator Sukhwinder Kotli.   The motion was initiated by Kotli, who accused the Chief Minister of making objectionable comments directed at him during a session on March 4. Seeking accountability, Kotli raised concerns about the status of his privilege motion against the CM during Mondays proceedings.   As Kotli stood to address the Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, other Congress MLAs rallied behind him, amplifying the demand for clarity on the motion. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa emphasized the gravity of the issue, condemning the alleged remarks made by the CM against Kotli and stressing the importance of a prompt decision on the privilege motion.   Expressing disappointment with the Speakers response, Congress MLAs expressed their frustration by walking out of the House.   Following the walkout, Adampur MLA Kotli addressed the media, reaffirming the demand for accountability and action on his privilege motion. Kotli expressed dissatisfaction with the Speakers inaction, stating that despite their demands, no progress had been made on the motion.
