BJP Faridkot candidate Hans Raj Hans gets ECI notice for threatening farmers

  • | Tuesday | 21st May, 2024

In a significant development amid the ongoing election campaign in Punjab, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday issued a notice to BJP candidate from Faridkot Lok Sabha constituency Hans Raj Hans. The action follows the allegations that Hans violated the Model Code of Conduct by making inflammatory remarks against the protesting farmers and even issuing threats.   The notice was issued on a complaint by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a farmers organization, accusing Hans of using provocative language to hurt the sentiments of farmers. The complaint also alleged that Hans comments could potentially disturb peace in the area. SKM, a conglomeration of farmers organization, was one of the first to react and file a complaint. Such threats are unacceptable and could incite unrest, said its spokesperson.   A similar complaint was also lodged by the Aam Aadmi Partys (AAP) Punjab unit, alleging that Hans Raj Hans delivered a series of speeches containing hateful rhetoric aimed at farmers participating in the protests. In a widely circulated video clip, Hans is purportedly heard warning that those who vote against him would face repercussions after the elections.   AAPs legal cell formally submitted the complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner, emphasizing that Hans comments not only breached the Model Code of Conduct but also posed a potential threat to public order. His statements are a clear attempt to intimidate voters and undermine the democratic process, said an AAP spokesperson.   The Model Code of Conduct, a set of guidelines issued by the ECI, mandates that political parties and candidates refrain from making statements that could incite violence or disrupt communal harmony during election campaigns.   The controversial video shows Hans speaking at an election rally at Bihle Wala village in Faridkot. He allegedly told the audience that voters opposing him would be dealt with after June 1 — the polling date.  This statement has sparked outrage among the farming community, particularly those involved in the ongoing protests against farm laws.   The controversy has attracted criticism from multiple political fronts. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia also filed a complaint demanding that Hans candidacy be revoked. Majithias complaint highlighted that Hans threats constituted a serious breach of both the Model Code of Conduct and the Indian Penal Code. Issuing threats of state repression post-elections is a grave offense and should be met with strict action, Majithia stated.   Faridkot Returning Officer Vineet Kumar confirmed that the ECI had issued a notice to Hans following the complaints. The matter is under investigation, and appropriate actions will be taken as per the findings, said Kumar. The ECIs notice is a critical step in ensuring that the election environment remains free from coercion and fear.
