Punjab all set to conduct 21st livestock census Sept onwards

Punjab is poised to embark on its 21st Livestock Census this September, marking a significant step forward in the data collection. The census, set to be conducted digitally, will encompass a comprehensive count of livestock, including pet dogs and cats categorized by their breeds for the first time.   Announcing the ambitious project during a state-level meeting held at Kisan Bhawan to review ongoing departmental projects, the state Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian highlighted the advanced methodology for this years census.   This will be the second time, following the 2019 census, that we will utilize digital tools, specifically tablet computers, for collecting detailed data on animals based on their breed and other characteristics, he stated.   According to the latest statistics from the Government of India, the census will cover over 64.75 lakh livestock and poultry in Punjab. For the first time, we will include pet dogs and cats in our count, distinguishing them by their breeds. Additionally, cattle at gaushalas (cow sheds) and those reared by nomadic tribes will be separately accounted for, added Khudian, emphasizing the censuss broadened scope.   During the meeting, the Minister also reviewed the functioning of veterinary health facilities, including outpatient departments (OPD), vaccination programs, and artificial insemination services. He directed department officials to prioritize the welfare of livestock farmers, ensuring they do not face any difficulties.   The welfare of our livestock farmers is paramount, Khudian stressed, adding, We must ensure that they receive the best possible support and services from the department.
