Post-Ceasefire: Life Eases Amid Cautious Vigil as Schools Reopen, Flights Resume

  • | Wednesday | 14th May, 2025

Punjab is cautiously stepping toward normalcy even as tensions remain high along the border. The border belt, recently rattled by multiple drone intrusions and a deadly aerial attack, is witnessing a phased easing of restrictions. Schools are reopening, air services are resuming, but security forces remain on high alert.   In a major breakthrough, Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested a suspected Pakistani spy from the Bathinda Army Cantonment. Identified as Raqeeb, a tailor originally from Roorkee in Uttarakhand, he had been working within the cantonment for the past two years. Acting on suspicion raised by Army officials regarding his activities, Bathinda Police took swift action, arresting him and seizing his mobile phone, which has been sent for forensic analysis. An FIR has been registered, and further investigations are underway.   Meanwhile, despite the ceasefire, the threat from across the border remains palpable. On Tuesday morning, a Pakistani drone was spotted in Ferozepurs Mamdot area. BSF personnel fired over 250 rounds, forcing it to retreat. A similar drone sighting in Hoshiarpur on Monday night triggered a blackout after multiple explosions were heard in Dasuya and Mukerian regions. A drone was also shot down in Jalandhars Mand area on Monday night.   Tragically, the woman injured in the May 9 drone attack in Ferozepurs Khai Pheme village succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Ludhianas DMC Hospital. The deceased, Sukhwinder Kaur, had suffered grievous injuries, while her husband and son are still under medical care. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for her family, although relatives are demanding Rs one crore and have begun a protest in their village.   With relative calm returning, District Administrations have initiated steps to restore daily life. Schools in Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, and Amritsar will reopen from Wednesday, albeit with revised timings — from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Amritsar airport will also resume flight operations with Indigo restarting services to major destinations. However, voluntary blackouts continue in sensitive areas like Amritsar and Pathankot. Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor light use and remain indoors after dark.
