After Sangrur Jail Scandal, Punjab Govt Ramps Up Prison Security with AI Surveillance

  • | Saturday | 17th May, 2025

A day after shocking revelations of a smuggling racket being operated from within Sangrur jail in connivance with a senior jail official, the Punjab Government on Friday announced the installation of state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based cameras across the states prisons. These ultra-modern surveillance systems will enable 24x7 monitoring, aiming to stamp out illegal activities such as drug use and mobile phone operations inside jails.   Punjabs Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, who conducted surprise inspections at the Central Jails of Rupnagar and Kapurthala on Friday, said that the State Government is taking urgent and stringent measures to enhance jail security. He said that jails across Punjab are being equipped with the latest security technology to ensure foolproof surveillance and to deter criminal operations being carried out behind bars.   AI-based cameras will not only help monitor daily activities but will also assist in automatically flagging suspicious movements or gatherings inside jail premises, said the Minister, adding that this initiative marked a major leap forward in the states commitment to prison reform and security.   During his inspection, Bhullar issued clear directives to jail officials and staff to remain vigilant and fulfill their responsibilities with utmost honesty and dedication. He warned that strict action will be taken against any government employee or inmate found involved in smuggling, drug use, or unauthorized mobile phone use within prison premises. Negligence in duty will not be tolerated under any circumstances, he asserted.   Reaffirming the governments zero-tolerance policy against corruption and crime in prisons, Bhullar highlighted that officials recently found complicit in illegal activities in Sangrur jail have already faced severe action. To further secure jail communications, jammers are being installed across all prisons in Punjab, following the approval of the Chief Minister.   Bhullar also emphasized the governments dual focus — not only on enforcement but also on rehabilitation. He said the Mann government is committed to transforming prisoners into responsible citizens through constructive programs and support systems.   During his visit, the Minister interacted with inmates, including women prisoners, reviewed jail hospital services, food provisions, and vocational training units. At Kapurthala Jail, he inaugurated a newly-built sports stadium and inspected goods produced by inmates under the jails factory initiative, showcasing the governments commitment to comprehensive prison reform.
