Beating Retreat Ceremony to Resume at Attari-Wagah, Hussainiwala, Sadiqi Borders in Punjab

  • | Tuesday | 20th May, 2025

Signaling towards improving relations between India and Pakistan, the iconic Beating Retreat ceremony at the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar, Hussainiwala in Ferozepur, and Sadiqi joint check-post near Fazilka is set to resume from Tuesday evening. The event, suspended since May 7 amid heightened border tensions following Operation Sindoor, will once again see BSF personnel and Pakistan Rangers perform the elaborate ceremonial drill, symbolizing national pride and discipline.   The retreat ceremony, a daily military practice marked by synchronized marching and lowering of flags at sunset, had been halted due to escalating cross-border unease. During this period, even the border fencing gates were shut, restricting the movement of farmers who cultivate land across the barbed wire fencing.   With the situation now returning to normalcy, BSF officials confirmed that the public will once again be able to witness the retreat ceremony at 6:30 pm every day at all three locations. Ahead of the resumption, the BSF conducted thorough inspections of farmland across the fencing to rule out any security threats like hidden explosives or landmines.   In a gesture of solidarity, Punjab Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal also visited the Shahpur border outpost in Ajnala on Monday to meet and honour BSF personnel. He offered sweets and fruit baskets on behalf of the Punjab Government and assured continued support. He also announced that from Tuesday, farmers will be allowed to access their lands across the fencing, reopening the gates that had remained closed for 28 days.   The farmers have endured enough. From tomorrow, they can tend to their fields as usual, Dhaliwal declared.   Meanwhile, the Border Area Development Front has urged the people to gather at the Sadiqi joint check-post near Fazilka by 5:30 pm to witness the return of the grand spectacle, which has long served as a symbol of patriotism and cross-border civility.
