Punjab BJP Seeks CBI Probe into Amritsar Hooch Tragedy

  • | Tuesday | 20th May, 2025

Punjab BJP on Monday submitted a detailed memorandum to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, seeking a CBI inquiry into the tragic Amritsar hooch incident and the alleged links of AAP leaders to the liquor mafia. The delegation, led by Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar, also demanded a probe into the exponential rise in assets of AAP Ministers, MLAs, and their close relatives over the past three years.   Jakhar, speaking to the media outside Raj Bhawan after meeting the Governor, said that Amritsar hooch tragedy was avoidable and linked it to the liquor policy introduced by the AAP government in 2022, mirroring the controversial Delhi Excise Policy. He urged that the ongoing CBI investigation into the Delhi policy be expanded to include Punjab, especially the Amritsar tragedy, to expose what he described as a thriving liquor mafia with political patronage.   The BJP delegations memorandum also sought Enforcement Directorate (ED) intervention to trace illegal financial gains and demanded that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) be roped in to probe cross-border drug trafficking and financial laundering linked to the liquor trade.   Jakhar alleged that Punjabs governance had been hijacked by AAPs Delhi-based leadership, leading to a constitutional crisis. The role of these Delhi leaders — some of whom have been allotted government houses in Chandigarh and attend state-level meetings — must be investigated, he said.   The memorandum further highlighted the mysterious disappearance of Harpreet Singh alias Harry, a convict in a murder case and co-accused in a heroin smuggling case allegedly involving ISI links. The BJP alleged that he vanished after securing bail under the pretext of a hernia operation and demanded a high-level investigation into the matter.   Also spotlighted was the need to examine stock registers and liquor contractor quotas since July 2022 to determine the extent of irregularities and illegal enrichment.   The delegation included senior BJP leaders such as Manoranjan Kalia, Jangi Lal Mahajan, Parminder Brar, Jagmohan Singh Raju, and others.   Calling for swift action, Jakhar emphasized, The people of Punjab deserve to know who profited while innocent lives were lost. It is imperative that the CBI, ED, and NCB collaborate to uncover the truth and ensure accountability.   AAP Hits Back: BJP Playing Politics Over Tragedy   Responding to the BJPs demand for a CBI probe, AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang slammed Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar for politicizing the Majitha hooch tragedy. Jakhar is playing politics over corpses to secure his place in BJP, Kang said, accusing him of double standards, having remained silent during the 2020 Tarn Taran hooch tragedy under Congress rule.   Kang asserted that the Bhagwant Mann-led government acted swiftly, arresting 16 culprits within hours, including contractors and officials. No one will be spared, he added.   Blaming the Centre for lax methanol regulation, Kang said that the tragedy exposed a national policy failure. Methanol flows freely across India — Jakhar should urge the BJP-led Centre to act, he said.   AAPs Neel Garg echoed the criticism, accusing Jakhar of hypocrisy and deflecting from core regulatory issues. If hes sincere, he should push his own government for reform, not politicize grief, Garg said.   responsibility of contributing actively to take the organization to even greater heights.
