Punjab Minister Slams Haryanas False Propaganda on BML Canal Water Sharing

  • | Saturday | 24th May, 2025

Amid growing tensions over water allocation, Punjab Water Resources and Soil and Water Conservation Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Friday issued a sharp rebuttal to Haryanas claims regarding its share from the Bhakra Main Line (BML) Canal, accusing the neighbouring state of spreading misinformation and distorting facts for political mileage.   Dismissing Haryanas assertion that it is receiving its full share of 10,300 cusecs from the BML canal, Goyal termed the claim factually incorrect and misleading. He asserted that Haryanas narrative is part of a larger propaganda campaign aimed at confusing the public and deflecting from ground realities.   At 12 noon today, the BML canal hasnt even reached its full operational capacity of 11,700 cusecs, said Goyal. Currently, only 9,690 cusecs are flowing at the origination point in Punjab. Of this, Punjab is rightfully using 2,025 cusecs, while Haryana is receiving 6,720 cusecs — far less than what they are claiming.   The Minister emphasized that Punjab continues to supply water to Delhi and Rajasthan from the canal, even as it exercises its own constitutional right to utilize up to 3,000 cusecs of water. We are fully committed to cooperative federalism and equitable resource sharing, he said, adding, but that does not mean we will allow the facts to be twisted or our rights to be undermined.   Goyal called on Haryana to stop indulging in publicity stunts and instead engage in constructive, fact-based dialogue. The people of Haryana deserve the truth, not manufactured narratives designed to incite emotions, he added.   As water disputes between Punjab and Haryana once again come under the spotlight, Goyals remarks mark a firm stance by the Punjab Government to counter what it views as an orchestrated attempt to vilify it. He reiterated Punjabs position that water distribution must be based on operational realities and legal entitlements, not political optics.   The government of Punjab will continue to act in accordance with the Constitution and protect the states legitimate rights, Goyal affirmed, but it will not allow itself to be scapegoated through misleading claims and media manipulation.
