SGPC Urges Centre to Intervene to Protect Sacred Sikh Shrines, saroops of Guru Granth Sahib

Amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has made an earnest appeal to the Government of India to take immediate diplomatic steps to ensure the safety and sanctity of Sikh religious sites and sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib located in the conflict zones.   In a strongly worded statement, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed deep concern over the precarious security situation in both countries, where historical Gurdwaras and saroops of the Guru Granth Sahib are situated. For the Sikh community, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not just a scripture — it is the eternal Guru, deserving the highest respect and protection, Dhami said.   Given the volatile atmosphere and threat of potential damage due to the ongoing military conflict, Dhami urged the Indian Government to immediately leverage its diplomatic channels and international platforms to reach out to the governments of Iran and Israel. It is Indias moral and diplomatic responsibility to ensure that no harm comes to these sacred relics of Sikh heritage, he said.   Calling on the Sikh diaspora in the region, Dhami appealed to Sikhs living in Iran and Israel to stay in contact with local authorities and work proactively to safeguard the Gurdwara Sahiban and saroops. He emphasized the need to shift the sacred scriptures to safer locations if required, under official supervision, to prevent any irreversible loss.   This is a matter of deep religious sentiment and cultural identity for Sikhs across the globe. Any damage to the holy saroops or gurdwaras would be an unbearable tragedy, Dhami warned. He further reiterated that the SGPC is closely monitoring the situation and remains in touch with relevant bodies to ensure swift intervention.   The SGPC president also urged the Ministry of External Affairs to issue an advisory and provide necessary support to Indian citizens, particularly Sikhs, in the region. The Government must act with urgency and sensitivity. Any delay could result in irreparable harm to our spiritual and cultural legacy, he added.
