Army Jawan, Accomplice Arrested in Espionage Case Linked to Paks ISI

In a major breakthrough against cross-border espionage, Punjab Police on Sunday arrested an Indian Army soldier and his accomplice for allegedly leaking sensitive military information to Pakistans Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The operation was executed by Amritsar Rural Police.   The state Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav identified the arrested Army personnel as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopy Foji — a resident of Dhariwal in Amritsar and currently posted in Jammu; and his associate Sahil Masih alias Shali — also from Dhariwal.   Preliminary investigations have revealed that Gurpreet Singh was in direct communication with ISI handler Rana Javed and was transmitting classified military information using pen drives and discs, said DGP Yadav. He added that the espionage operation represented a grave threat to national security, as highly confidential data was being systematically collected and smuggled to foreign intelligence.   Two mobile phones with virtual numbers and encrypted chats — allegedly used for communication with ISI operatives — were recovered from the accused. Authorities believed that the communication network was carefully designed to evade Indian surveillance.   Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh elaborated that Gurpreet Singh joined the Indian Army in 2016 and had since exploited his official position to gain access to strategic and restricted information. His role was not just passive; he actively collected, stored, and relayed this information to Pakistan handlers via clandestine methods.   The SSP disclosed that a Dubai-based drug trafficker named Arjan, originally from Dhariwal, played a key role in connecting Gurpreet Singh with Pakistani handlers. Arjan served as the bridge between Pakistans ISI and local operatives, introducing Gurpreet to ISI contacts nearly five months ago, he said.   The exchange of information was incentivized with monetary rewards routed through a complex web of bank accounts involving friends, relatives, and foreign intermediaries to obscure the financial trail. The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation when the duo attempted another handover of military data.   An FIR, dated June 21, 2025, has been registered under Sections 3, 5, and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Lopoke Police Station in Amritsar Rural. Investigations are ongoing to identify and dismantle the broader espionage network, including both domestic collaborators and foreign handlers.
