Arora to Take Oath as Minister Today; Mann Govts 7th Cabinet Expansion in 3 Yrs

  • | Thursday | 3rd July, 2025

The Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government in Punjab is set to undergo its seventh Cabinet expansion on Thursday, marking yet another strategic reshuffle in its three-year tenure. This time, the spotlight is firmly on Ludhiana Wests newly elected MLA Sanjeev Arora, who is poised to be sworn in as a Minister at a ceremony scheduled for 1 pm at Punjab Raj Bhavan.   The expansion, reportedly involving only one induction, carries significant political undertones. A businessman-cum-philanthropist, Arora recently vacated his Rajya Sabha seat — considered a secure political position — to contest and win the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll. He is expected to be handed a prominent portfolio, likely in Housing or Industry.   His ministerial entry, announced in advance by both AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann during the by-election campaign, was long anticipated. However, the induction was delayed due to Governor Gulab Chand Katarias absence from Chandigarh. With the Governor now in the city, the path is clear for the much-talked-about elevation.   While Cabinet expansions typically include multiple inductions or a wider reshuffle, this round stands out for featuring only Aroras name — raising eyebrows across the political spectrum. The official communication from Raj Bhavan has confirmed that only one oath will be administered, suggesting a meticulously scripted move rather than a routine reshuffle. Despite two vacant slots in the 18-member permissible Cabinet size, the Mann Government appears to be opting for a silent recalibration rather than an overt shake-up.   Aroras trajectory — from resigning his Rajya Sabha seat – with a term lasting until 2028 – to defeating Congresss Bharat Bhushan Ashu by over 10,000 votes in bypolls, and now stepping into a ministerial role — signals more than individual ambition. It reflects AAPs evolving political roadmap in Punjab and possibly at the national level. Aroras unopposed rise within the party ranks also suggests a tightly controlled power structure, where loyalty and strategic alignment with central leadership appear to be key factors for elevation.   This singular induction may also be the opening act in a larger, phased Cabinet reconfiguration. With past reshuffles seeing multiple sackings and inductions — including the exit of Ministers like Vijay Singla, Inderbir Singh Nijjar, and Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, AAP has demonstrated a pattern of periodic realignments. The most recent being in September 2024, when ministers including Anmol Gagan Mann and Chetan Singh Jouramajra were dropped, and newer faces like Hardeep Singh Mundian and Dr Ravjot Singh were brought in.   Interestingly, Aroras name had surfaced in controversy last year when the Enforcement Directorate raided his premises in connection with alleged land fraud. AAP had then dismissed the move as a politically-motivated witch-hunt. Now, his ascension to a ministerial post could be read as the partys assertive rebuttal to those investigations — rewarding resilience and loyalty under pressure.
