MOHALI: The vigilance department has initiated an inquiry against two senior officers of the Mohali municipal corporation for their alleged connivance with contractors and causing a loss of Rs 23 lakh to the civic body by retendering certain projects.MC commissioner Rajesh Dhiman has received a letter in this regard from the state vigilance department seeking his comments on the issue.The inquiry has been initiated following a complainant filed by deputy mayor Manjit Singh Sethi. Dhiman said, "We have received the letter, but I am yet to go through it. A reply will be filed after conducting a thorough inquiry ."Sethi said he had written a letter to the Punjab chief minister in December last year about the alleged connivance of two high officials of MC. In January , Sethi had sent reminders to minister of state urban local bodies, secretary of urban local bodies and vigilance department.A senior MC official, against whom the allegations were levelled, said, "I am not aware of any such inquiry . If there is an inquiry , I will reply if asked to. Sethi said last year the MC had called for expression of interest for 49 various civil works and a group of contractors submitted bids for the tenders.The lowest bidder was granted the work for Rs 5.12 crore. "When the matter was put forth the finance and contract committee, I observed that the price is high and our sources told us that the bids have been made after forming a group. Also our sources told us that there is alleged connivance of MC officials in the allotting of tenders.
