CBI arrests IFS official for taking Rs 1L bribe

The CBI also taped the conversations between Choudhary and Kumar.A trap was laid and as Kumar handed over the money to Choudhary, he was caught red-handed. He met Choudhary to explain his side of the story but did not receive a proper hearing. Choudhary sought B-class prisoner facilities.Choudhary is also facing a corruption case in Mumbai.

Times News NetworkChandigarh: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee member secretary Birendra Choudhary for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh for not taking action against four private firm owners accused of violating environmental norms.The Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer was caught from his house in Sector 27 on Monday night. The action was taken on the complaint of Rajinder Kumar, a sawmill owner.Kumar alleged Choudhary served him a show-cause notice regarding revoking of consent to operate his sawmill on December 6, 2016. He met Choudhary to explain his side of the story but did not receive a proper hearing. Three other businessmen who had received similar notices also met Choudhary. CBI officials said Choudhary demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 each from all four of them. The amount was reduced to Rs 25,000 each. It was decided that Kumar would hand over the collected Rs 1 lakh to Choudhary at his house. The CBI also taped the conversations between Choudhary and Kumar.A trap was laid and as Kumar handed over the money to Choudhary, he was caught red-handed. CBI officials claimed Rs 2 lakh and documents pertaining to properties and bank accounts were recovered from his house.On Tuesday, a local court sent Choudhary in judicial custody but came down hard on investigating agency officials for producing him in the courtroom late. Choudhary sought B-class prisoner facilities.Choudhary is also facing a corruption case in Mumbai.
