Irrigation scam: Punjab and Haryana high court rejects contractor plea

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court has dismissed contractor Gurinder Singh 's petition, who is accused of being involved in Punjab irrigation department scam.Singh had earlier sought directions from the Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) and had requested a seven days prior notice before his arrest.The VB has initiated an inquiry in a number of tasks allotted through e-tenders by the drainage and Kandi area wings of the irrigation department.Vigilance teams have found that Gurinder was favoured by the senior officers of the department, who allotted him more than 60 per cent of total works by cost in the past.After the high court decision that dismissed the contractor's plea, the state government issued a press release, stating that during the probe it was found the annual turnover of the company increased from Rs 4.50 crore to about Rs 300 crore within a short span of time.Many tasks were allotted to Gurinder's company at higher rates by way of single tenders ensured by tailor-made conditions and clubbing of works, it read.
