Whenever traffic personnel step away from the Blue Star junction in Anna Nagar for a short break, all hell breaks loose. The busy junction, which connects Second Avenue and Fifth Avenue, lacks traffic signals. According to a traffic police personnel manning the busy junction, the problem started six years ago when Chennai Metro Railway Limited (CMRL) made the area one-way to facilitate Metro work. “Even after the stations were opened in February 2017, Blue Star junction, the Anna Nagar Roundtana junction and Ayyappan Koil junction continue to function without any traffic signals. With two traffic police personnel per shift, it is a struggle to manage the heavy traffic, especially during rush hour and weekends. We have appraised our senior officials of the matter,” he said. The Assistant Commissioner of Police — Traffic, Anna Nagar, has promised that the signals will be installed in a few weeks. “The signals were not used for almost six years; as a result, the machines conked out. The Traffic Planning department is replacing all the signals at this junction,” he says.
