R.K. Mutt Road–St. Mary’s Road junction plagued by poor traffic regulation

  • | Friday | 20th April, 2018

Traffic police would do well to make their presence felt at the intersection of R.K. Mutt Road and St. Mary’s Road in Mylapore. The stretch between Mandaveli signal and St. Mary’s Road intersection on R.K. Mutt Road is one-way. According to the existing traffic arrangement, motorists from R.K. Mutt Road cannot take a ‘right’ turn to go to St. Mary’s Road. Motorists can reach St. Mary’s Road from R.K. Mutt Road by taking a ‘U’ turn at Mandaveli bus terminus signal. Motorists from St. Mary’s Road can take a left or a right turn on R.K. Mutt Road.

Traffic police would do well to make their presence felt at the intersection of R.K. Mutt Road and St. Mary’s Road in Mylapore. At present, traffic regulation is abysmally low on this busy section. Only one police personnel is deployed at the junction, and even this deployment is irregular. In contrast to what prevails at this Luz Church Road junction and Mandaveli junction, the volume of traffic is out of proportion to the space available at this this intersection. There is a bend at this junction, on the side of R.K. Mutt Road where traffic moves towards Mylapore. Motorists, including drivers of MTC buses, get struck at the bend while trying to take a left turn and drive down R.K. Mutt Road, as they cannot see buses coming in the opposite direction from Mylapore on R.K. Mutt Road. Motorists, including motorcyclists, park their vehicles near the bend, which aggravates the problem. Due to poor police presence at the junction, one-way rule is flouted with impunity. Motorists use St. Mary’s Road, which is one-way, as if it is meant for two-way traffic. Lack of lane discipline of motorists is a major concern on this section. The stretch between Mandaveli signal and St. Mary’s Road intersection on R.K. Mutt Road is one-way. Motorists from St. Mary’s Road can take a left or a right turn on R.K. Mutt Road. In existence for many years now, this traffic arrangement is aimed at easing the traffic congestion near Kapaleeshwar temple tank intersection. Overgrown trees around the junction also block the illumination from old sodium vapour street lights. “Steps will be taken to prevent traffic violations at the junction,” police sources said.
