City students shine in competitive exams

Sathvik, a student of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar, has secured the All India second rank in the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST), required for students seeking admissions into the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar. “I have always had a fascination for pure sciences which is why I decided to apply to NISER. While I am yet to decide what I want to pursue, Physics is my favourite subject and I am considering it,” he said. Stating that the preparation required for the NEST was similar to that of the JEE (Advanced), Mr. Sathvik said that the paper has five components. “Apart from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, there is a general component which also comprises of English language questions,” he said. While there still exists a huge demand for engineering courses, Mr. Sathvik said that awareness was on the rise about the options and institutions offering pure science courses as well. Apart from NISER, NEST scores are also required for admissions into the University of Mumbai’s Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS). Both the institutions were set up by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India in 2007. Medical aspirant K. Keerthana, a student of PSBB in K.K. Nagar, has already secured the fifth place in the Jipmer entrance test and All India Rank 12 in the NEET exam. She has also secured the All India Rank 31 in the MBBS entrance exam of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The results for the exam were declared on Monday.
