At least 20 hurt in Chennai building mishap

CHENNAI: At least 20 migrant workers engaged in construction of an hospital near Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) were injured when scaffolding and iron girders crashed late on Saturday evening. At least three of the injured are very critical at a corporate hospital.Three of them were stable and ready to be transferred to government hospital from a corporate hospital at Perungudi, seven were kept under observation. As they tried to fix the huge structure before the concrete mixture solidified in the plastic cans, the scaffold collapsed.

At least two patients suffered head injuries.Ten other injured persons were rushed to a government medical facility at Saidapet, where eight have been stabilisied and sent to Royapettah government hospital. Five more were rushed to emergency and trauma care centre at Injambakkam. Government authorities said they would take care of the payment."We do not take petients to private hospitals usually, but this time target was nearest ambulance and nearest hospital, said Prabhudoss of EMRI.The four-storey under construction building was on MGR Salai in Perungudi. All the injured were rushed to government hospital at Saidapet and a corporate hospital at Perungudi. At least 10 ambulances rushed to the spot, after news spread in the evening.Fire and rescue service personnel from Guindy, Raj Bhavan, Saidapet, Tiruvanmiyur and Adyar also reached accident spot. Around 30 firemen were deployed in rescue work, and they started clearing the crashed scaffolding, besides evacuating people living nearby.The paramedics at the ‘108’ ambulance attended the injured people and they told police personnel that a few people suffered major injuries, as the iron scaffolds fell on them and they were trapped underneath. As scaffold fell on neighbouring houses with a big noise, residents rushed out in shock.A police officer said the accident took place, as the construction workers were trying to fix the huge iron railings to erect them to outside the building after keeping these iron railing inside huge plastic cans and pouring in concrete mixture. As they tried to fix the huge structure before the concrete mixture solidified in the plastic cans, the scaffold collapsed.
